“The Super Mario Bros. Movie” (2023)

2023 is starting to look like the year that video game-inspired IPs break the curse; after “The Last of Us”, we get a great fun “The Super Mario Bros. Movie”.

After watching “The Super Mario Bros. Movie”, I am pleased that they decided to go with the animated route for this movie because I honestly can’t see this ever working as a live-action movie, and if any of you doubt it, check the 1993 version.

The animation of this movie is beautiful, I saw this in Imax, and I was transported to this Mario world as I have never seen before.

I love how it still feels like the video game, but it takes it to the next level with some of the best animations I have seen.

The details and easter eggs in this game are insane; if you are a Mario fan, you will have many things that will recognise and will get you smiling.

The characters are great, and how they adapted to the story really builds up from what we knew before; characters like Donkey Kong and Toad are really fun and more fleshed out, but for me, who steals the show is Princess Peach and Bowser.

Peach in this movie rocks; she is badass and just made me think I wasted years playing Mario trying to save her, and she definitely didn’t need it.

Bowser, on the other hand, shows another side of himself, a musical side that only Jack Black could execute at that level.

This is a funny movie, but I do think many of the jokes are more effective if you know the Mario world, I think a younger crowd will have a harder time with it, and some of the darker bits might even scare them; still, there is just enough to have kids interested.

Soooo just before we finish, we need to talk about it, Chris Pratt voice as Mario, well, it is a bit weird to start, but honestly, it grows on you, and by the end, you just over it.

Have you seen this movie?

What is your favourite Super Mario character in the games?
