“The Banshees of Inisherin” (2022)

This was not what I expected, and to be honest, I can’t believe anyone expected this story going into it.

Martin McDonagh is a great director, and I do not think anyone would argue that, but for me, where he brings something unique to the table is his writing; no matter how outrageous the story is, he just has the talent to craft his stories in a way they become believable even when they are not.

This movie is the best example yet.

Still being fair to everyone involved in this movie a big reason he is able to pull it off is because of the amazing chemistry of Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson, a chemistry that McDonagh was clever enough to recognise as probably the reason why “In Bruges” is still today seen by many, me included as one of the best dark comedies ever made.

“The Banshees of Inisherin” is a harder movie to get into and fall in love with compared to some of McDonagh previous work; it requires more of a specific state of mind to really get into it, but as you watch it, you feel it sucking you in, and you start to understand the beautiful story about friendship, depression, abandonment and mental illness.

Farrell and Gleeson really take on the opportunity to put their names in the race for best actor and supporting actor for this year’s Oscars, but they are not alone; you can also add Kerry Condon’s name to the supporting actress race; she doesn’t have much screen time but the bit she has she kills it.

With beautiful cinematography, this movie takes advantage of the beauty of Irland, showing that Ben Davis was in charge of some of the most “alien and weird” MCU movies like “Guardians of the Galaxy”, “Eternals” and “Captain Marvel” can scale it down and still impress with the beauty of his work.

Just have to say that I wish the movie just had a bit more of a hook that would keep me invested from start to end; when it got me invested in it, I was all in, but at points, it did lose me for a few minutes because the story wasn’t able to keep the momentum.

Have you seen it? What did you think?
What is your favourite performance of Colin Farrell in 2022?
