175 MILLION!!! REALLY?
Come on, how can you spend 175 million in a movie and get a cast that includes Robert Downey Jr., Antonio Banderas, Michael Sheen, Jim Broadbent, Emma Thompson, Rami Malek, John Cena, Kumail Nanjiani, Octavia Spencer, Tom Holland, Craig Robinson, Ralph Fiennes, Selena Gomez and Marion Cotillard and end up making this movie, after making “Cats” its like Universal is trying to lose money.
Before going into the review, I want to make a formal apology to everyone involved with “The Grudge” (2020), you are not the worst movie of 2020.
So after watching the trailer of “Dolittle ” we thought RDJ voice was going to be an issue, guess what after a few minutes of a painfull script, no logic in storytelling, bad editing, and just a cringing plot and acting you event forget what the hell RDJ is doing.
There is so many things wrong with the movie. Still, probably the worst problem was giving this movie to a director that has very few movies under his belt and the ones he did are completely in a different register, like “Syriana” and “Gold”.
It felt like Stephen Gaghan was entirely out of his deep and had no vision for what he wanted, because of that the movie feels choppy, and things don’t flow what makes every joke feel out of place.
That said he did had an uphill climb with one of the worst scripts I have seen in a long time and performances that are just not working, RDJ decided to give us a mix of his biggest hits with a Tony Stark and Sherlock Holmes mixed with a Jack Sparrow, but imagine he only brought the bad bits to the game.
The rest of the voice talent felt they got picked so they could have a poster full of big names, Tom Holland, for example, has probably 10 minutes in the movie, still need to admit that was the most fun I had in this movie, it was like a game to try and name every single big star voice to the animal they were.
Visually the movie looks ok; the animals are well done, and there are some cool set scenes, but they lose all of its punch when this set pieces are leading us to a completely ridiculous plot that envolves taking stuff out of a dragon’s ass.
This is not a good movie not even for kids and its disappointing to see so much talent and money invested in a project that was obvious no one had love for it, and the only reason for them to be involved had to be a check, in the end, wonder how much of the 175 million was for the cast.
Have you seen the Dolittle, what did you think?
What is up with January, why we get all these crapy movies in January?
