"Freaky" (2020)⠀ Review by Big J(João Jesus)⠀ "Freaky" (2020)⠀
Review by Big J(João Jesus)⠀
⠀
I saw many great reviews about this movie and many raving about the two leads' performances; well, I guess this is one of those movies I will just have to agree to disagree.⠀
⠀
Don't get me wrong, this is not a bad movie and the performances are not horrible, but compared with the first "Happy Death Day" directed by the same director, Christopher Landon this does not have the same punch or charisma.⠀
⠀
Unlike Jessica Rothe we never really get enough of Kathryn Newton at the start to care for her arc, she does the most she can with the switch to the dark side, but it would have been more impactful if we had a bit more of her being herself.⠀
Vince Vaughn's take on the "girl" persona is so cliche that it becomes not believable and a parody, yes this is mixing comedy and horror but the way it does it is very heavy-handed.⠀
⠀
This had loads of potential and might even have the right actors but what is given to them is not enough; the movie is messy, makes no sense most of the time, believe it or not, the most believable thing is the body switch concept.⠀
⠀
The script has some really cheesy lines that take you out of it, full of cliches and characters that are part of every comedy and horror movie ever done, and worst it knows where to stop, it takes the joke and story way above the limit and becomes cringy.⠀
⠀
Have you seen this movie, what did you think?⠀
What classic comedy concept would be a great horror movie?⠀

"Edward Scissorhands" turns 30 years today, and if "Edward Scissorhands" turns 30 years today, and if you know us just a bit you know, it's one of our favorite movies of all time.⠀
⠀
Starting with the visuals and vision of Tim Burton, to the beautiful story that is powerful and heartwarming like very few we ever saw. Still, nothing of that would work if it wasn't for the performance of Johnny Depp that was able with almost no words, make an unbelievable character believable and relatable.⠀
⠀
Like many Hollywood movies, Depp wasn't the only option, and over the years, we know from different sources at least another 7 actors that were considered for the role.⠀
⠀
Jim Carrey - at the time, he didn't have many movies under his belt, and even with all his talents for sure, we would have a less serious and over-the-top performance.⠀
⠀
John Cusack - He was the favorite actor of Caroline Thompson, the writer of the movie, still with very few roles that show he could take on this role.⠀
⠀
Robert Downey Jr. - is an amazing actor and just 2 years after he would take on "Chaplin" and show the world he could take on any role, still the weirdness of "Edward Scissorhands" maybe was not a great fit.⠀
⠀
William Hurt - was also in discussion but after 2 oscar nominations, he probably didn't think the role was what for him.⠀
⠀
Gary Oldman - Oldman found the story to be absurd but understood it after watching "literally two minutes" of the completed film.⠀
⠀
Tom Hanks - Hanks also turn it down in favor of critical and commercial flop The Bonfire of the Vanities.⠀
⠀
Tom Cruise - Fox was insistent on having Burton meet with Tom Cruise. "He certainly wasn't my ideal, but I talked to him", Burton remembered. "He was interesting, but I think it worked out for the best. A lot of questions came up".Cruise asked for a "happier" ending.⠀
⠀
Michael Jackson also expressed interest, although Burton did not converse with him, and then we have Johnny Depp that just took this character to where no else could, it gave him flaws, weaknesses, and a heart.⠀

"Mank" (2020)⠀
Review by Big J(João Jesus)⠀
⠀
David Fincher is back, and like expected, he delivered a technically perfect movie but coming from him, I did expect more than perfection.⠀
⠀
This movie is about the back story of one of the most iconic and disruptive movies ever made, "Citizen Kane" that, when it was released in 1941, was way ahead of its time and shaped many of the cinema we see even today.⠀
This movie is an homage to all that but forgets at points that it should also try and be its own thing.⠀
⠀
Fincher shows in every shoot why he is one of the best directors and storytellers of all times; each shoot is beautiful, it tells a story and creates a reaction from the audience; there isn't one element that he is not in full control, but unlike most of his movies, it lacks the energy and ferocity that gets us on the edge of the seat.⠀
⠀
That said I don't think that was ever his intention; this is a love letter to cinema, it is Fincher talking about the struggle of the creators and how hard all the process is, and that is entirely brought to screen by Gary Oldman that is simply incredible how he steals every shoot he is in to the point that honestly, no one else stands out, even Amanda Seyfried that I saw many talking about is frankly forgettable because of just how good Oldman is.⠀
⠀
I was really impressed by Erik Messerschmidt that has here a first cinematography credit and delivers some of the most beautiful shots I have seen in some time.⠀
⠀
So this does not break any molds, but let's be honest, probably I am not that impressed because of the level Fincher got us used to, but it is still one of the best movies of the year, and probably one that will make a splash in the Oscars and that shows that Netflix is willing to get out of their box and take a risk.⠀
⠀
Have you seen this movie, what did you think?⠀
What is your favorite David Fincher movie?⠀

"Fatman" (2020)⠀ Review by Big J(João Jesus)⠀ "Fatman" (2020)⠀
Review by Big J(João Jesus)⠀
⠀
You have to at least give some credit to when people try and make a completely unique movie and outside the box, and this one is all that for sure.⠀
The problem sometimes is with the execution and how the focus on what is interesting is lost with all the side events happening.⠀
⠀
What I was loving was the idea of a kid being so mad with Santa that he decides to kill him by getting a professional killer that shares his hate for Santa, that was the story I wanted to see and they even had a perfect cast to do this with Gibson, Walton Goggins and Chance Hurstfield that play their part of this triangle perfectly.⠀
⠀
Mel Gibson lately is picking up some crazy roles; on one side, we can't say they are roles that allow him to show his talent, but also they are fun, and these directors know exactly how to mix the fantasy with the real world while keeping the pace.⠀
⠀
Walton Goggins keeps being one of the most underrated actors working today; he makes any role, no matter how ridiculous it is, feel grounded and raw, and this is no different.⠀
With these 2 performances is even more impressive how the young Chance Hurstfield delivers a bat crazy performance that makes him the movie's scariest character.⠀
⠀
What really ruins the movie is the all army angle and the end that also felt very rushed and underwhelming.⠀
⠀
Have you seen this movie, what did you think?⠀

"Boss Level" (2020)⠀ Review by Big J(João Jesus "Boss Level" (2020)⠀
Review by Big J(João Jesus)⠀
⠀
I think it's a pretty sure bet that when Harold Ramis came up with "Groundhog day" he never imagine it how many times his idea would be "reimagined".⠀
⠀
From Sci-fi with "Edge of Tomorrow" and "Source Code", horror with "Happy Death Day" and yes off course comedy with "Naked" and "Palm Springs" everything was pretty much made but "Boss Level" is able to never really care and just have fun by using the concept with some great action and a very charismatic set of characters.⠀
⠀
Frank Grillo is one of those actors that is always just good enough to give what a role requires but never really stand up until now for me, in this movie, he does what he does best, action but is also able to add something not to be expected, comedy.⠀
He is charismatic and is able to go back and forward with some great characters that make this movie much better than expected.⠀
⠀
After watching "Fatman" its now official that Mel Gibson is picking some fun movie to be a part; in this one, he is not in it for long, but still he gave some crazy Gibson that I am actually digging. Still, he was in this longer than Michelle Yeoh that if you blink you could miss her.⠀
⠀
But that is something common in this movie; they tried to get as many big names in the poster as possible but like Gibson and Yeoh, KenJeong and Naomi Watts had very uneventful roles in this, the good news is that many of the less-known names are really good and the main attraction of this movie is how they stitch the story and time loop concept like a video game.⠀
⠀
The use of video game mechanics where we see all the failed attempts and how all is edited makes it fast pacing and fun, but like all-time loop movies, sometimes it does get very repetitive.⠀
On the other hand, with every new assassin's introduction, it does get some momento and especially shout out to Selina Lo that has a really funny character in Guan Yin.⠀

(continues in comments)

Meryl Streep in "Bridges of Madison County"⠀
⠀
Steven Spielberg, bought the film rights to Waller's novel for $25,000 in late 1991, before its publication—by the time of the film's release, the novel sold 9.5 million copies worldwide.⠀
⠀
Spielberg first asked Sydney Pollack to direct, who got Kurt Luedtke to draft the first version of the adaptation but then bowed out; Ronald Bass was brought in by Kathleen Kennedy and Spielberg to work on the script, but they were unsatisfied with the results.⠀
⠀
The third draft by Richard LaGravenese was liked by Eastwood, who quite early had been cast for the male lead, and by Spielberg, who liked LaGravenese's version enough to consider making Bridges his next film after Schindler's List. ⠀
⠀
Waller championed Isabella Rossellini to play Francesca; she was a "strong contender" in a list that also included Anjelica Huston, Jessica Lange, Mary McDonnell, Cher, and Susan Sarandon. But despite Spielberg's initial reluctance, Eastwood had advocated Meryl Streep for the role from the beginning.⠀
⠀
Meryl Streep has been recognized with multiple awards and nominations for her work in film, television, and stage. She holds the record for the most Academy Award nominations of any actor, having been nominated twenty-one times—seventeen for Best Actress, and four for Best Supporting Actress—since the first nomination in 1978 for her performance in The Deer Hunter. She has won three times for her work in Kramer vs. Kramer (1980), Sophie's Choice (1983), and The Iron Lady (2012), making her the fifth actor to win three competitive acting Academy Awards.⠀

Review by Big J(João Jesus)⠀
(NO SPOILERS)⠀
⠀
Aneesh Chaganty is really setting up a reputation for himself; he is able to approach a concept done many times before and be able to give it some energy and a breath of fresh air, he did it with the technical use of cameras and storytelling in "Searching" and here does it once again especially because of his 2 unbelievable leads. ⠀
⠀
Sarah Paulson is having a hell of a year after taking on an impossible role in Ratched where she brought to life Nurse Ratched in a way many could not expect she embodies here many traces that reminded me of Kathy Bates in "Misery" and that is impressive because the character of Annie Wilkes is one of Stephen King most interesting ones.⠀
⠀
with all that said, it is even more impressive how good Kiera Allen is in this role; she plays every element of her character to perfection, and her chemistry with Sarah Paulson is incredible, making every moment even more emotive and heart broking.⠀
There are moments in this movie that I would even say Kiera is able to outshine Sarah.⠀
⠀
The movie's problem is that in the middle, there are many moments that it kicks in high gear and then puts the breaks on and loses the memento; still, because of the 2 lead actresses, it still grabs our attention.⠀
⠀
What this movie also does is to uplift with never cheapening the overcome of our weaknesses, and honestly, it felt refreshing and inspiring.⠀
⠀
This is a major win for Hulu and especially for the director that with this shows his previous movie was not a fluke.⠀

"Nomadland" (2020)⠀ Review by Big J(João Jesus) "Nomadland" (2020)⠀
Review by Big J(João Jesus)⠀
⠀
Many people will stumble into this little movie for many different reasons; some will come out of it with many different outcomes also from experience.⠀
⠀
For every one that goes into it to see what Chloé Zhao can bring into the next big Marvel movie the "Eternals" they will probably not understand the fit with the 2 projects but actually, if you see how she is able to direct and capture the big open spaces where humans are just a second thought you probably could see how she would use her eye to make what can be a very unique Marvel movie.⠀
⠀
If your reason is to see another tour of force from Frances McDormand as she gave us in "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri", this is not it; this is one of her best performances, but it's very low key, instead of using her words she uses her eyes and soul to tell us everything we need to know about how broken this person is.⠀
⠀
This is a movie about loneliness, and in a certain way, it transport us inside that state of mind, you watch the movie, and sometimes you forget, and you are there, you moving from place to place and feel restless about the world and want to move on.⠀
More this is a movie about resilience, how you handle life when it knocks you down and how you stand back up after you lost everything, a message we all need right about now.⠀
⠀
The movie is absolutely beautiful and the cinematography of Joshua James Richards is so simple that you might even forget how hard it is to shoot like he does in some of the moments where the natural light is used perfectly to set the moods.⠀
⠀
For these reasons, this is a movie that very early will define how you feel about it, it can become very boring and will rub you the wrong way or make you lose yourself, which is something very few do.⠀
⠀
This was a great pick by @leffest20 to close the festival, I loved this movie and fully recommended it even if you might hate it, but that is why cinema is so personal and makes it fun to talk about.⠀
⠀
Have you seen this movie, what did you think?⠀

⠀
When we created our Instagram, we did it with just one simple objective; we wanted to talk about movies with each other and share it with others while having fun every time.⠀
⠀
We always tried to create a bubble of positivity around our community and make sure that it would never change.⠀
We promised we would always be honest with our opinion and create a post about whatever we wanted with never thinking about the likes and other views; after 20k followers, we are happy we can still do that.⠀
⠀
We have some posts that organically reach almost 10k likes and others that stay at like 500, but the point was never the likes. It was about the sharing and the community, and for us, we have the best community out there.⠀

That said, we can't pretend we don't see around us; lately, we see much more negativity, people complaining about other people having opinions that are different from theirs, complaining about the likes and the attention their posts are getting and just not having the fun of creating.⠀

And the core of all this is that people are putting their need for likes and attention above everything else.⠀

Frances McDormand in "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri"

Frances Louise McDormand (born Cynthia Ann Smith, June 23, 1957) is an American actress. She is the recipient of numerous accolades, including two Academy Awards, two Primetime Emmy Awards, and a Tony Award, making her one of the few performers to achieve the "Triple Crown of Acting."

In 1984 she made her film debut in Blood Simple, the first film by the Coen brothers, McDormand has been married to director Joel Coen since 1984.

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri is a 2017 black comedy drama film written, directed, and produced by Martin McDonagh; the film received widespread acclaim, particularly for the performances of McDormand, Harrelson, and Rockwell, and McDonagh's screenplay. McDormand and Rockwell each won an Academy Award, Golden Globe Award, BAFTA Award, and SAG Award for Best Lead Actress and Best Supporting Actor, respectively.

The character of Mildred was written with Frances McDormand in mind, and likewise, the character of Dixon was written specifically for Sam Rockwell.
McDormand initially felt that she was older than the character as it was written, and suggested that Mildred instead be Angela's grandmother; McDonagh disagreed, feeling that it would change the story too much.
McDormand's husband Joel Coen persuaded her to take the part regardless.
McDormand took inspiration for her character from John Wayne.

"2001: A Space Odyssey" (1968)⁣ Review by Big J( "2001: A Space Odyssey" (1968)⁣
Review by Big J(João Jesus)⁣
⁣
For the opening event of @leffest20 we had the opportunity to watch the remastered 4k version of Stanley Kubrick "2001: A Space Odyssey" on the big screen; a movie that is over 50 years and that we saw dozens of times, so what is the big deal?⁣
Well, if we think of how many movies can stand the test of time after 50 years, we probably can think of a handful full, so what can we say of a movie like 2001 that gets even better.⁣
⁣
This was just an incredible experience; the movie visually is just breathtaking, and I can see now that this is how Kubrick intended this movie to be seen, and no home theatre can make it justice.⁣
⁣
What makes this movie incredible is just how real it feels, yes its science fiction but maybe because of the lack of CGI and how Kubrick makes the story more about humanity's humanity, we wonder how real it all is.⁣
⁣
It is a clear piece of human theater where it's divided into clear acts but is never intended to be seen in the same way by different people, and that is why even today, we can discuss the meaning of the monolith, the same way we will always discuss what the meaning of life is is.⁣
⁣
It's just incredible how so many years ago they had the foresight to imagine things like HAL 9000, and honestly, every time I see this movie it makes me look at Siri in a diferent way.⁣
⁣
This is a true masterpiece and technically almost flawless, and maybe that explains why so many believed Kubrick faked the moon landing because let's be honest, if he was able to do this, he could do anything.⁣
⁣
Have you seen this movie, what did you think?⁣

Since the start of the year, we have seen some awf Since the start of the year, we have seen some awful movies, and today we decided to look at some of the worst ones up to now.⠀
⠀
"#Alive" - This movie started really strong; the way it was focusing more on the isolation and how someone could lose their minds for not being able to go outside felt very relevant and interesting, but as it moves on it starts to be just another zombie movie where the "hero" can be surrounded by thousand zombies but never gets bitten. ⠀
⠀
"Inheritance" - Was really into seeing Simon Pegg going darker but the writing is just so bad that becomes ridiculous and loses any potential that it could have, it is predictable, and the twists can be seen a mile away.⠀
⠀
"Books of Blood" - I am a huge Clive Barker fan so I was really excited for this and an anthology movie where the same person directs every chapter usually deliveries exciting results, the problem with this one is that is very and high and low in the quality.⠀
The bad are so bad that leaves a bad taste for the all thing.⠀
⠀
"Holidate" - Ok its a Netflix movie to watch in an afternoon that you don't have nothing to do, still it can be made better and try at least to bring something different to a concept we saw a million times.⠀
⠀
"Peninsula" - I really like the first movie, "Train to Busan" but unlike many I dont think its one of the best zombie movie ever made, still it did had many strong elements, elements this movie eliminated it and in exchange decided to create a fast and furious version of it, and that i hated.⠀
⠀
"Witches" - Robert Zemeckis doing a Roald Dahl story produced by Alfonso Cuarón and Guillermo del Toro with Anne Hathaway and Octavia Spencer in the main roles; there is no way this can go wrong, right?⠀
Well there is one way and they did it, the story does not flow and never really gets your interest, and the awful CGI just makes it even worst.⠀

"The Mist" (2007)⁣ Review by UNYOLO⁣ ⁣ Today "The Mist" (2007)⁣
Review by UNYOLO⁣
⁣
Today it's our turn to join this "GIANT" event organized by @omega_movie_reviews that focus on #GiantMonsterMovieEvent.⁣
⁣
When @omega_movie_reviews invited us a couple of weeks ago to join straight away, the classic giant monsters came to mind, Godzilla, King Kong, and even more recent ones like Cloverfield and Pacific Rim. ⁣
Still, something was pulling us to a more unknown movie, the 2007 "The Mist" written by Stephen King and directed by Frank Darabont that is behind most of the good King's adaptations.⁣
⁣
So we went with our gut and picked it; after rewatching it, we now know why in our minds we wanted to talk about it;⁣
This is a movie about a community that, from one day to the other, is overwhelmed with a mysterious and invisible threat that forces them into lockdown.⁣
Every time they step out, they are in danger of dying and being restrained starts to pull tricks on their minds, and human nature kicks in, being scarier than any "monster," and with time, they start to lose hope, does any of this ring any bells.⁣
⁣
Yes there are giant monsters in this movie but maybe because we can't see them or just see parts of it makes it even more impactful.⁣
The movie deals really well with the paranoia and fears of a crowd that needs to pull together but at the same time their main goal is to save themselves and that mechanic is something King and Darabond do very well.⁣
⁣
Thomas Jane is not always an actor that blows us away, but in this, he handles the role just right, and by the end, you can really grasp his desperation and just can not believe where this movie took this character, no spoilers but this is one of the most shocking endings you will ever see.⁣
⁣
Luckily, this movie is called the mist, and in the center of the story, we have a mist that covers everything because the sfx are not the best, but to be honest, they are never the focus of this movie's strengths.⁣

"The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run" (2020)⁣ "The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run" (2020)⁣
Review by João Jesus⁣
⁣
I am a huge Spongebob fan for many years now so I have to say when the movie started, I did have some minutes of shock because of the new crisp 3d look.⁣
For some reason, the old animation style worked better for me because of the personality and energy that SpongeBob brings to the screen; with time, that actually stopped being an issue as I got used to it.⁣
⁣
The movie started strong, love Gary, and was nice to see that Spongebob and Gary's emotional connection being put on the center of the story, sadly; as the movie goes on, it loses its focus and, worst, its direction.⁣
It starts to throw everything at us, its music numbers, famous cameos, flashbacks, and storylines after storylines with many that we don't even care.⁣
⁣
Ye it's always fun to see Keanu Reeves in a movie like this, but even he felt forced into it, it was just very much like a paint by numbers of everything people wanted to see and lacked the irreverence that makes Spongebob so much fun and unpredictable.⁣
⁣
Looking at the previous movies directed by Tim Hill I can see probably all the traces of how he directs comedy, and probably it was obvious he would not be a great fit for this; apart from the muppets, all his characters are very much directed for kids only, Spongebob always had a bit of both kids and grownups alike in its corner.⁣
⁣
Out of the "trilogy" of movies, this one is the weakest mainly because it never tries to be more than just an ok movie, and they probably need to be thankful that instead of a cinema, they are on Netflix where people will be more willing to give it a pass because it did not cost them an arm and a leg to go and see it with all the family.⁣
That said, I really was hoping for a fun and uplifting movie because, to be honest, we all needed a bit of SpongeBob positivity to cheer us all up in this time of need.⁣
⁣
Have you seen this movie, what did you think?⁣
What is your favorite Spongebob moment ever?⁣

She was listed among the world's highest-paid actresses in 2006, 2018 and 2019.

In 1990, she made her Hollywood debut in the racing film Days of Thunder, opposite Tom Cruise.

Dogville is a 2003 avant-garde crime tragedy film written and directed by Lars von Trier, the film is the first in von Trier's projected USA – Land of Opportunities trilogy, which was followed by Manderlay (2005) and is projected to be completed with Washington.

Dogville opened to polarized reviews from critics. Some considered it to be pretentious or exasperating; it was viewed by others as a masterpiece and has grown in stature since its initial release.
