We love to talk about the new movies that are coming out, the new movies we just watched, but for us, the classics that we saw together for the first time many years ago are as important.
I would even say more important, most of this movies bring back some fantastic memories that Jasmine and I had together, it was something that really bonded us.
I always watched movies with my older brother so for me cinema has always been connected to family, dreams, and imagination, the imagination that we had as kids and if we are lucky we will never lose it.
And if we want to talk about kids imagination, adventure, the fantasy, and family few movies do it like “Goonies”, and even fewer could capture it better on screen then the biggest kid working in Hollywood, Steven Spielberg.
Just like the “The nightmare before Christmas” that everyone sees it as a Tim Burton movie, Goonies is seen by most as a Spielberg movie.
So it’s understandable that the plot feels so similar to many of the values that are so present in all his movies and mainly in movies like “ET”, but the visuals, the pacing, and even the casting feels again aligned to his vision. (also check our review of “Ready Player One”)
But let’s talk about the movie, I guess it comes with no surprise to say this is one of the best adventure movies ever made, but what makes it even more special, especially if you watching it with your kids.
First, it will grow with you, no matter what age you see this movie there is something there for you, that is why I will watch it over and over with my kids, and maybe one day she will do the same with hers.
Then it shows kids being the heroes, it portraits the kids wanting to help their parents and risking it all for them, this is empowering for kids, and I love that.
The kids are not just the cool and popular ones that everyone loves, no many of them are the rejects, the weird ones, but all have something to give to the group and help to move forward in the adventure.
The bad guys are menacing but funny; this is something that is not easy to do and maybe only “Home alone” did it better.
Like in many of the stories of Spielberg you have a recurrent and important message that I believe is super important for kids, don’t judge a book by its cover, and if you saw the movie and remember Sloth, you will know what I am talking about.
All this together for me created a perfect storm, that when they added a great director and great cast that is so natural together created one of cinema history most significant masterpieces.
“Heyyyyyy you guys”
I don’t know how many time I have heard this in my house out of my dad lol.
The first time I saw “Goonies” and specially Sloth I remember how scared I was, but I think it was also the first time I saw something that scared me turn in to such a sweet character.
I remember thinking I should get to know people before I judge them, that was also a message my mum and dad always told me so it must be true lol.
The movie is excellent, almost every year I watch it, and it still holds up, I love the jokes and the adventure but most of all I love the friendship between all of the young kids.
Being a kid, I find it amazing how in this movie they are the ones that will save the day; they do everything to help their family and no matter what they stick together.
Also as you must have noticed by now, I love the underdogs, the rejects, the kids that no matter what people think of them they don’t care and they will rise to the occasion.
Love the weird, smart kid with all the gadgets, the “mouth” that always has something quick to say, I love them all.
“Goonies” is a movie that brings me so many memories and because of that its one of my favorites, it’s exciting how they face all the challenges and reminds me so much of “Indiana Jones”, another classic my dad introduce me to.
I am not surprised to know that the director of “Indiana Jones” is the writer of “Goonies” and so many other movies I love so much.
So I recommend everyone to see this movie, and to share it with all your friends and another fun thing to do that my dad showed me was to say the “Goonies” oath out loud, it was removed from the movie, but you can still find it in Google;
I will never betray my goon dock friends
We will stick together until the whole world ends
Through heaven and hell, and nuclear war
Good pals like us, will stick like tar
In the city, or the country, or the forest, or the boonies
I am proudly declared a fellow Goony.
